Symmetry Painting for Kids

Materials You’ll Need

Getting Started

  1. Prepare the Space: Cover the area to avoid mess or set up on easy-to-wipe-down indoor or outdoor surface.

  2. Explain Symmetry: Explain symmetry simply, using examples like butterflies.

  3. Model Symmetry Painting: Paint several spots of color on one side of a page, fold paper, press down and unfold to reveal symmetry.

  4. Give kids a blank page or a cut-out heart, butterfly, star, Easter egg, or other image for a free-form or guided symmetry art.

Fun Activities

  • Taking turns: Take turns painting one dot, line or design at a time, and folding paper to reveal mirrored image.

  • Free Exploration: Let kids experiment with different designs and colors on their own on a blank page.

  • Guided Art: Cut outline of butterfly, heart, Easter egg, star, etc. Paint and fold in half for fun holiday activity, greeting card or any-day craft.

  • Hand print art: Place handprint near folded edge of page to create heart in space between hands (see below).

Symmetry art with washable paint offers endless creative possibilities for preschoolers. These activities not only teach children about balance and patterns but also enhance kid’s fine motor skills and boost their confidence. Dive into the world of symmetry art with your toddlers, preschoolers or older kids and watch their imaginations soar. Happy crafting!

Focus on Fun

Remember that this is about process, not product!

You will most likely become frustrated if you expect your child to make a frame-able work of art.

Focus on having fun, not creating perfection. This is a valuable skill in-and-of-itself.

The goal is for kids to engage with different tools and textures, build creativity, foster sensory observation skills of textures and colors, discuss the science, math and ELA early learn skill of cause and effect of different techniques, and, most importantly, to have fun while bonding, connecting and spending quality time with you - even if you just have 5 extra minutes a day!
